Myths about your dog's saliva

Have you heard that your dog's mouth is much less germy than your own mouth? This statement is not true. Rather, it is more likely that most people cannot normally become infected with the bacteria found in dogs' mouths, as most bacteria do not pass from dogs to humans.

Nevertheless, there are dangerous germs - such as salmonella and rabies - that can be transmitted to us humans through dog saliva. In today's blog post, we explain why the germ load in your dog's mouth is not as dangerous as is often claimed.

Is your dog's mouth cleaner than your mouth?

No, don't worry, your dog's mouth is not cleaner than your mouth. It is a common myth that your dog's mouth is cleaner than your mouth. In reality, it's more likely that both mouths can harbour a variety of bacteria and germs that can lead to dangerous diseases.

The difference, however, is that dogs have a stronger immune system that helps them fight off infections better. The mouths of humans are much more susceptible to infections. For these reasons, dental hygiene is not only important for us humans.

By cleaning your dog's teeth regularly and thoroughly, you can prevent infections and diseases. Use our emmi®-pet ultrasonic toothbrush to clean your dog's mouth.

What diseases can you get from dog saliva?

Dog saliva can transmit various diseases if it enters the human body. Some examples are:

  • Pasteurellosis: This is a bacterial infection transmitted through contact with dog saliva. Symptoms can include swelling, redness and pain.
  • Leptospirosis: This bacterial infection is transmitted through contact with infected dog saliva or urine. It can cause fever, headache, muscle pain and jaundice.
  • Capnocytophaga infection: This is a rare but potentially dangerous bacterial infection transmitted through contact with dog saliva. It can cause symptoms such as fever, chills, pain and jaundice.

It is important to wash your hands thoroughly when you come into contact with dog saliva to minimise the risk of infection. If you develop symptoms such as fever, chills, pain or jaundice, please seek medical attention.
